Welcome to the SURFER competition for Israel!

In collaboration with the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach we collect images of algebraic surfaces generated with the SURFER program. Have a look at some of the past creative surfaces from a previous competition below!

How does the competition work?

Algebraic surfaces are produced by simple equations in three spatial coordinates x,y,z.
All points which satisfy these equations are drawn. For example, the equation x^2 + y^2 + z^2 - 1 = 0 results in a sphere.

The competition requires creativity, intuition and mathematical skill in order to create equations yourself or to change given equations to produce beautiful images. The images are easily generated with the SURFER programme. You will find the programme and a guidance manual on the SURFER-Installation-Site.

A link to upload your image can be found on the following competition site.

Or go directly to uploading and viewing images.

Who can take part?

Everybody is invited to take part!
You can submit an entry that is just your own work, or you may like to submit a group entry from your class or family.

All entries are welcome!

The competition run from December 24th 2015 to October 24th 2016.   The judging panel consist of the following four judges:   Moshe Bar, Director of the Gonda Multidisciplinary Brain Research Center at Bar-Ilan University Andreas Matt, Managing Director IMAGINARY Gregory Soifer, Professor of Mathematics at Bar-Ilan University Arkadius Kalka, former project coordinator for IMAGINARY at Bar-Ilan   The judges decision will be final and we will not be able to enter into correspondence.   Our three winning surfaces are: (1) I Love Chocolate! by Regina Bittencourt (2) The Black Hole Blaster by Ofek Grunfeld (3) Surface of degree 7, singularities #9 by Jean Constant Tips and links:

Images that have been created from other competitions can be seen at the Galleries.
