A special mini symposium on “Mathematics of Planet Earth” will be held at the ÖMG-DMV-Conference in Innsbruck, Austria. It is organized by Gert-Martin Greuel, Technische Universität Kaiserslautern, and Andreas Daniel Matt, Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach, and will show various techniques and examples of how mathematics can help us to tackle problems of our planet – from climate systems to geomaths, from mathematical biology to finance systems.

Planned program (details can be found here):

Day 1: 23.9.2013, 15:30 - 18:30

“Can mathematics help to control and avoid environmental stress?” by Dietmar Kröner, University of Freiburg

“Atmospheric Modelling on Arbitrary Grids” by Hilary Weller, University of Reading

“Essential Principles of Geomathematical Modeling and Their Applications” by Willi Freeden, University of Kaiserslautern

“What mathematicians can do to save Alpine glaciers?” by Guillaume Jouvet, Freie Universität Berlin

Day 2: 24.9.2013, 15:30 - 18:30

“The Mathematics of Biological Evolution” by Peter Schuster, Institute for Theoretical Chemistry, University of Vienna

“Modeling, valuation and management of economic risks” by Ralf Korn, University of Kaiserslautern

“How Mathematics can Help to Observe Climate Change - an Example” by Volker Michel, University of Siegen, Geomathematics Group

“Generalized mass action systems and Birch’s theorem” by Georg Regensburger and Stefan Müller, Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics (RICAM)
