The exhibition “Mathematics of Planet Earth” is part of the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften (Science Night) at the Free University of Berlin - 13. June 2015
Volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, melting glaciers: Can they be calculated? How big is the contribution of mathematical sciences to the task of mastering these current ecological problems and catastrophes that massively challenge our world? The exhibition “Mathematics of Planet Earth” gives insights into these questions.
The exhibition, which was also shown in the Deutsches Technikmuseum in Berlin, is part of the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften at the Free University of Berlin. It has been developed jointly with IMAGINARY and the Deutsches Technikmuseum Berlin. Infos about the Science Night can be found here; for detailed info about the project please click here.
Dune Ash
With the interactive software program Dune Ash, developed by the University of Freiburg, you can place a volcano, define a wind field and observe how the ash cloud will spreading (computed in real-time).
Aletsch glacier
With the interactive film “the future of glaciers” you can explore a mathematical model of the Aletsch glacier. How will it (probably) look like in 20 years, or in 100 years?
