I AM A. I. - a visual and interactive introduction to neural networks and reinforcement learning, as part of ESA’s Φ-week, which takes place virtually this year. All events will be live-streamed.

“I AM A. I. - explaining artificial intelligence” is an open-source exhibition project dedicated to explaining methods and concepts of Artificial Intelligence to a general audience. Featuring interactive videos that guide the visitor through the exhibits as well as so-called trails with integrated apps and games that dive deep into the scientific concepts, I AM A. I. explores novel formats for science communication. A graphic novel about the current state of AI and a do-it-yourself-tutorial on how to build an AI using only cups and paper complete the exhibition. It started on June 10, 2020, in a digital format and will launch in 2021 as an open-source traveling exhibition in Germany and then internationally.   In this special side event for Φ-week, Andreas Matt, director of IMAGINARY and mathematician, will introduce I AM A. I. and will show a series of interactive apps to explore neural networks and reinforcement learning (RL). You will train a simple network to recognize handwritten numbers and to approximate other functions, you will dive into the gradient descent method and play with a robot performing Q-learning! And maybe, we even have time to play with an AI Piano!   All participants are invited to “play and think along”, i. e. be prepared for a participative event. The aim is to look at some core principles (basics) of how neural networks are trained and how RL works, in a visual and interactive format!    We will also discuss concepts of communicating AI and mathematics in general and are looking forward to a lively discussion!   Click here to go to the live stream directly.

Φ-week is the annual Earth Observation event organised by ESA-EOP. It focuses on innovation in Earth Observation, and showcases the latest achievements in Earth Observation science, technology and applications.

Φ-week 2020 aims to contribute to the concept of Digital Twin Earth - an AI-driven digital replica of our planet that converts the full power of AI, Earth Science and Modeling, cloud computing and Earth-scale environmental, societal and economical data into actionable insights for scientist, political and economic decision makers.

Φ-week 2020 brings together the necessary ingredients to build the Digital Twin Earth and enable science-based decision capabilities, enhanced predictions and simulations, to responding to the complex societal and environmental challenges of our times.
