A permanent IMAGINARY installation in the Mathematical Cabinet of the “Deutsches Museum” in Munich. At three interactive stations (Surfer, Cinderella and jReality) you can experience the beauty of mathematics and discover your own mathematical intuition by becoming creative yourself! The idea behind this installation is to bring the inconceivable or imaginary in mathematics to appear as an image.
Three-dimensional images arise out of mathematical formulas, complex physical systems become directly visible. Science has always tried to comprehend and shape the forms of objects. In the past this was done with pencil and ruler, today one applies computers with powerful mathematical programs for visualisation.
For every single picture, hundreds of thousands of virtual rays must be determined, millions of triangles calculated, or extensive and complex simulations carried out. In ways that remain mysterious, the aesthetic component of mathematics reveals itself thereby. The three interactive programs demonstrate the current state of the art in geometry and in communication of mathematics.
